Opinions and commentary from the attorneys at Miami Legal Center.

On Monday August 1, 2016, Department of Homeland Security announced an 18-month redesignation and extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria. What does it mean?

Individuals from Syria who already have TPS may extend their TPS by re-registering during the period from August 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016.

Syrian nationals or individuals without nationality who habitually resided in Syria who do not have a current TPS may register for TPS during the period of August 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016. To qualify, these individuals have to continuously reside in the United States since August 1, 2016, and to be continuously present in the United States since October 1, 2016.

This 18-months extension will allow qualifying persons registered during the specified period of time to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document, which will expire only on March 31, 2018.
